Chrysocolla on Quartz from Peru
These beautiful crystals have just arrived in the Den from the Tentadora mine located in the Ullpac mountain region of Peru. These unique specimens display Chrysocolla and Malachite encrusted within the cracks and structure of the Quartz. Chrysocolla can also present as boytrodial growth patterns with copper, Azurite and Shattucktite also present.
Chrysocolla has a vibrant history and is known to many of the ancient civilisations. The name ‘Chrysocolla’ has Greek origins in that “chrysos” means “gold,” and “kola” meaning “glue or Solder” It is believed it got this name because a lot of Chrysocholla was found when mining for Copper, Gold and Silver and the Copper element was used to solder gold. We know this as Chrysocolla was first mentioned by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and botanist, in 315 B.C. He describes how Chrysocolla was used by goldsmiths as an ingredient in solder.
Cleopatra was also known to have a love of Chrysocolla and would wear this to assist her with her diplomatic role. Cleopatra was known to believe that Chrysocolla was able to calm high tempers and encourage sensitivity which in turn helped her negotiation skills. Ancient Egyptians generally had a love for Chryscolla and Malachite and it was often used to adorn the tombs of Pharaohs.
During the Middle Ages, the chrysocolla stone was a key medicinal ingredient. Based upon his research, Hippocrates wrote about chrysocolla and its medicinal benefits leading practitioners at the time to start using it for treating wounds and scars.
As time went on Chrysocolla became more of a spiritual tool and most notably the Native American’s believed that it could provide physical and emotional healing. It was often used in rituals and to decorate and adorn sacred items.
Only a small amount of this particular mix of Chrysocolla is found at any one time and it is mined by one person by hand. For this reason it is considered rare.
I have a lot of experience of working with Chrysocolla and you will often hear me refer to it as a ‘Goddess stone’. I have many reasons for this, the main one being the energy and frequency of this crystal being closely linked with Mother Earth. Chrysocolla has a soft and gentle energy but don’t let this fool you as she is a powerful gift from Mother Gaia.
