Peruvian Pink Opal

Pink opal is referred to as a member of the ‘common Opal’ family, which unlike precious Opals, are not iridescent. Almost all Peruvian Pink Opal comes from the Andes and it is considered the country’s national gemstone. Pink opal is primarily composed of hydrated silica, which is similar to quartz. The difference between quartz and opal is the opal's water content, which usually makes up 6-10 percent of the stone.

Pink opal ranges in colour from pastel pink to deep shades of pink, with other colours frequently displayed in bands or streaks, such as yellow, brown, peach and black dendrite inclusions.

I first came across Peruvian Pink Opal 12 years ago when it was very difficult to obtain. I remember being drawn to a small tumble stone in a local crystal shop. Although I knew of Pink Opal this was the first time it called to me. Looking back it makes perfect sense as I had just come out of a difficult relationship and was very confused emotionally. Pink Opal calls to you at times of stress and upset, especially where the heart Chakra is concerned. Pink Opal is also known to bring your ‘soul mate’ into your life and its no coincidence that I met Jamie shortly after.
